Teach for Us
Job Description- Fellows, Interns and Volunteers
All fellows, interns and volunteers will be teaching in schools located on the tourist resort island of Phuket, in southern Thailand. The Thai school year begins May 15th and ends March 21st. The first semester is from May 15th to October 20th and the second semester from November 1st to March 21st.
Fellows, interns and full-time volunteers will be responsible for teaching English in an assigned school, from Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm. Full-time volunteers are expected to spend at least three months with the Foundation, fellows usually stay with us for a full Thai school year and interns for a semester. Fellows and interns should plan to arrive about one month before the semester/school year starts, in order to complete training. Each intern/fellow will be responsible for participating in the training that we provide and applying it to the students in their charge.
Besides formal teaching hours, he or she should also be willing to give time to lesson planning, materials preparation and occasional field trips for the students. There may also be a small number of administrative responsibilities, but these will constitute a very small proportion of the intern or fellow's time.
Although fellows, interns and full-time volunteers would not be paid by the Foundation, we can arrange accommodation or provide an accommodation allowance and meet the costs of transport to and from school.
There is more flexibility for volunteers who are not full-time, who can help out for a few or a lot of hours during the week. We do our best to come to an arrangement that works well for you and for us.
The foundation will write a letter of recommendation for fellows, interns, or volunteers who request it.
Our hope is that everyone who helps out, in whatever way, will forge a lasting relationship with the school in his or her charge.
How to Apply
For internships or fellowships, we are looking for current students and graduates to apply. As important as your area of study is your openness and energy to travel half way around the world for an extended period of time and be willing to embrace a new country to support its educational development and therefore help its people. We are also interested in hiring students/graduates who demonstrate a belief in the importance of improving the English skills of others and who are enthusiastic about the goals of the foundation. People who have an interest in travelling, particularly to Southeast Asia, are ideal. Of course, those who are interested in education would be great too. Please send an essay of approximately 500 words, explaining your qualifications, experiences, and why you are interested in being part of this program. Send it to tomd@phukethasbeengoodtous.org, subject line VOLUNTEER FELLOW/INTERN.
If you would like to volunteer in any other capacity, we’d also be delighted to hear from you. We welcome native English speakers or Thai nationals. Your enthusiasm and experience are at least as important as paper qualifications. You do not necessarily have to be a qualified teacher, but you do need to feel a strong sense of commitment towards the children and to how you can help improve their life chances by working with the Foundation. Local residents or people who are in Phuket for a limited time are equally welcome.
Application Deadline
Ongoing recruiting.
On behalf of the Phuket Has Been Good To Us Foundation, we are thrilled at the prospect of working with as many of you as possible. This is a wonderful cause in a beautiful place, and the children of Phuket cannot wait to meet and learn from you!
