Meet the Teachers of the Phuket
Has Been Good to Us Foundation
We currently employ four paid teachers and two volunteer teaching fellows in two
schools on Phuket Island, Thailand.
We also have a volunteer who coordinates Coconut Club.
Teacher Profile: Carl Osmar
Director of Education
Carl comes from England. He has graduate and post graduate qualifications in
education and world religions. He is also an elected Fellow of the Royal
Anthropological Institute of Great Britain. Carl has been involved in most
aspects of education for 35 years. Among other things: acting as a classroom
teacher, high school coordinator of studies, teacher trainer, Government
advisor. He has had both academic books and articles published in the fields of
education and religion. For the last three years Carl has lived in Phuket as a
teacher of English and a TEFL trainer. He teaches at Rachaprachanukroh School in
Kamala.
Communications & Finance Coordinator: Sarah Foster-Gross y Puente
Sarah
Foster - Gross y Puente, teaches at both Kalim and Rachaprachanukroh Schools.
Sarah also works in the office for a small number of hours a week as
Communications and Finance Coordinator, with responsibility for our volunteer program, fundraising, finance management, and community relations. A political junkie, both
Sarah's mother and father work in Education in developing countries, making this not only a passion but a family tradition. Born in Singapore, she has
lived all over the world, including South Africa, Indonesia, and Spain, though she considers Washington DC her home. She received her BA in Political
Science and Spanish from Smith College in the US in 2006. Subsequently, Sarah worked at Centronia, the first bilingual charter school in Washington DC,
writing grants and developing an after school program.
Wanting to return to South East Asia, Sarah moved to Phuket in February 2007, where she received a Certificate in English Language Teaching from Cambridge University. She taught Kindergarten at Anuban Phuket School for a year, before joining the Foundation to teach at Kalim School. Her students at Kalim bestowed her with the honorary title of 'Favorite Teacher'. As well as being a well-loved English teacher, Sarah is also a qualified Yoga instructor.
Opportunity Coordinator: Ashley Nelson
Ashley Nelson, teaches at Kalim School. Ashley
also works in the office for a small number of hours a week as the Opportunity
Coordinator with responsibility for our popular quarterly
Newsletter, she also liaises with our potential volunteers from overseas and manages our
Facebook page.
Ashley's background is in art and education. She graduated from Smith College in
Northampton, Massachusetts where she received a B.A. in Art History and American
Studies.
Teacher Profile: Lena Graff
English Teacher
Lena
Graff is a special education and English teacher. She received her degree in
Education and Family Studies at University of Arizona and has countless years
working with children. She is an American and hails from Washington DC where she
worked for two years with children with extreme disability cases in Washington
DC, Maryland and Virginia. Most recently Lena has taught English throughout
Tokyo and in Phuket Town for one year. As well as her education interest, Lena
also enjoys various outdoor adventure sports, learning Thai and says she is
excited to move to Kamala. She teaches at Rachaprachanukroh School in Kamala.
Teacher Profile: Lynn Crevling
Volunteer Teaching Fellow
Lynn
has a Masters degree in Public Administration from Syracuse University in
Syracuse, New York, and has worked for and served on the Board of Trustees for
social service and arts-related non-profit organizations in Ohio. She has
developed youth programs and curricula in those capacities and as a volunteer.
Lynns embracing of diversity and interest in culture are reflected in her work
and involvement in the African American and Native American communities. Lynn
says that she is following her heart in coming to PHBGTU to work with children.
She is interested in learning more about Thai culture, Buddhism, and looks
forwards to spending free time with yoga, running and drawing. She
teaches at Rachaprachanukroh School in Kamala.

Teacher Profile: Armelle Hellouin de Cenival
Volunteer Teaching Fellow
Armelle Hellouin de Cenival has been a primary school teacher for 13 years including 2 in Paris and 11 in San Francisco, California. She received her Teaching degree as well as a Masters at the University of Paris, France and got a Bachelor degree at Mc Gill University in Canada. She has worked on several continents as she is fond of new cultures and enjoys traveling. She is thrilled about getting to know the wonderful and welcoming children of Kamala school where she is now teaching. She loves the outdoors as well as yoga, horseback riding and photography.

Volunteer Profile: Tavis McGinn
Coconut Club Coordinator
Tavis helps our teachers in the Rachaprachanukroh School and he runs our after-school program Coconut Club for students who live at the school. He received his BS in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before coming to volunteer in Thailand, Tavis owned a small business in North Carolina, worked as a human resources consultant in Washington, DC, and more recently taught English at a school in Bali. He is excited to now be working with the children in Phuket and particularly enjoys reading, games, and cooking with the children. In his free time, Tavis enjoys scuba diving, running, cooking, and slowly learning Thai.
