Kalim school after the tsunami The Baan Kalim School is located on Kalim Beach, just south of Patong. Our Foundations founder, Tom McNamara long had a relationship with the Kalim School, sponsoring sports teams and day trips through his Baan Rim Pa restaurant group, located just down the road. The original Kalim school was largely destroyed by the December 26, 2004 Tsunami. Luckily the tsunami occurred on a Sunday when school was not in session. The children were moved to a temporary school on higher ground while clean up and reconstruction began.

Kalim school reconstruction after the tsunami Not long after this, Mr. McNamara had a discussion with the schools headmaster at the time Khun Sutat Worasri about how the restaurants could assist them. At the time, tsunami relief funds had been pouring in. The school was being rebuilt, a new larger, more well constructed school with modernized equipment. The two men ultimately decided that perhaps the best option was for something more long term. English education at the Kalim school was of a poor quality. The Thai teachers of English did not speak it very well themselves and the school could not afford to provide anything better. The idea for the Phuket Has Been Good to Us Foundation was born.

school on opening day The newly constructed Baan Kalim school opened on May 15, 2006. By this time, the Phuket Has Been Good to Us Foundation had been formed and was ready to begin its three year pilot program providing free, quality English language education. The Foundations Director of Education at the time, Kate Cope, was the first teacher.

Two and a half years later, we are now in final semester of the pilot program. We have learned much about working within a Thai government school, about teaching English to young Thai children and about assessing their progress. The Foundation intends to continue working with Kalim students, as well as students in the Kamala school, where the Foundation began operating in 2007.
