Khun Sutat Worasri is the director of the pilot school. As the headmaster of the original school, Khun Sutat will prove to be a very valuable asset to the foundation as a whole. Kathy Davies, an active member of the Phuket community, has worked in innovative and dedicated ways to raise money in the wake of the December 26, 2004 tsunami. Working with a non-registered charity, she has been in the position to directly help individuals with cash aid immediately and in several cases help people get back in business for the long term. She has concentrated on the village and people in Kamala, Kho Lak and Baan Nam Khem, which were among the worst affected areas in Thailand. In Kamala, she has rebuilt several houses, worked closely with 22 orphaned children, and provided a full-time caregiver, as well as clothes and day trips, for them. She has also aided in the rebuilding of restaurants in nearby Laem Sing Beach. In Khao Lak she has made weekly trips to provide food and water to several of the temporarily relocated villagers in the worst affected areas. In Baan Ban Sak, Kathy has made donations to the school, including funds for computers and buildings, as well as raising sponsorship through age 16 for the 24 orphaned children there. Clearly, Kathy has a keen sense of how to effectively and innovatively secure and provide aid when it comes to children, as well as others in need.
Fleur Birch-Atkinson has called Phuket Island her home since 1983, and recently returned from the United States having completed her Bachelor’s degree at Smith College. Before college, she attended both the British Curriculum International School (formerly Dulwich International College) and was a member of its first ever graduating class, as well as Phuket International School (PINS). Her attendance at both schools definitely shaped her experience of learning fluent Thai. She learnt Thai through both a formal and informal setting and can attest that learning a second language at a young age is a very important quality to have no matter how it is done, as long as exposure is to the fullest extent possible. She believes that one of her strongest assets is her ability to communicate with Thai people in their own language, and is interested in making the same be true for Thais with English speakers, as Phuket, like much of the world, is becoming an undeniably English-speaking place. As a young community member here she volunteered extensively at the Phuket Special School for children with special needs, as well as the Phuket Safe House for youngsters in precarious household situations. As a passionate member of this community, she is dedicated to giving back to it for the wonderful life she has been able to receive here. She strongly believes that education is essential to furthering Thai youth’s chances here, and therefore Phuket’s future.
